Stratford Caldecott"The intelligence by which we exercise dominion over the world should be a pure light which unites the interior and exterior cosmos by revealing the divine intentions that generate both."
On 17 July 2014, our beloved friend Stratford Caldecott died after a long battle with cancer. A long time contributor and member of Communio's editorial board, Stratford also co-founded the journal Second Spring and authored several books, including Beauty for Truth's Sake. In his memory, we feature here all of his articles published in Communio.
"The intelligence by which we exercise dominion over the world should be a pure light which unites the interior and exterior cosmos by revealing the divine intentions that generate both."
"Extraordinary or 'paranormal' phenomena and apparently miraculous healings abound in the New Age movement. But what exactly is the challenge they represent, and how should the Church respond?"
"The process of education occurs in the context of an initiation into communio, into a community of relationships extending through time, which is also the lived experience of a cultural tradition."
"An 'authentic theology of integral human liberation' starts not from abstract notions of 'the people' and their 'oppressors,' but from a personal encounter with Christ in prayer and the sacraments."
"The world must be given back [its[ sacramental quality, its dimension of mystery, . . . such a reorientation . . . would spell the final demise of mechanism as the paradigm of cosmic order."
“Modernity entails, ultimately, an injustice that transcends the occasional or accidental exploitation of man by man—a more fundamental injustice against not only the image of God in man but God himself.”
“The Christian faith reveals that the One known to every religion possesses an interior life as Trinity. If we are to transcend the creation when we return to the One, the Christian knows that all we are and do does not perish but is resurrected in the life to come.”
“Where God is not revealed as fully personal in se, human personality is always in danger of being undervalued, or even suppressed in some way.”
“In the purity of that awareness of the radiance of being, purged of the constructions we normally place upon it, the doors of perception are cleansed and the things in the world may be seen as they are: infinite. This is not Christian faith, but a Christian need not deny its value, its attraction, or its integrity.”
"The Church does not save by light alone, or by words alone, in Gnostic fashion, but by touch."
"If hope for the Great Jubilee is to be even partially realized, the implications for world civilization will be immense."
"The Trinity is one simultaneous and harmonious act by which the Persons are who they are, and they are who they are only in the one act of being interrelated."
“With his eye turned firmly outward and upward—to the world and to God—Patmore’s writing reveals a keen perception of the infinite disclosed in every single finite creature.”
